Today Piddinghoe is a quiet picturesque village in the South Downs National Park close to Newhaven. The South Downs Lewes is an ancient town with a sizeable population serviced by a wide selection of amenities a good range of pubs catering for all tastes, lots of boutique shops and the usual selection of grocery shops and supermarkets. The tidal river Ouse runs alongside the village and gives PIddinghoe villagers sailing and rowing opportunities as well as beautiful views of the South Downs. It's deserved time away from the busy pressures of modern life and provides a beautiful reconnect with nature. Starting in Southease, the walker will travel north along the bank of the River Ouse with the river running to your right hand side. After about 30-40 mins you should start seeing the Southease bridge in sight. This adds 6.3km (4 miles) to the walk, making a total walk length of 29.9km (18.6 miles). I no longer had to rush and could really take in the sights again. This does not mean though that the village is unpeaceful, on the contrary the existence of a number of fine manor houses testify to the serenity of the village. At the ridge, first detour 200m south to Mount Caburn, retrace your steps, then skirt north around the 'bowl' shaped valley in front of you.
